Lyon County plans to nab speeders
Monday, June 2, 1997 | 11:59 a.m.
Sheriff Sid Smith said a squad of volunteers equipped with radar guns and cellular phones will monitor problem areas and pass along information on speeders to sheriff's deputies.
The sheriff's office will the check license plate number of speeding vehicles with the Department of Motor Vehicles to determine the vehicle owner, who will be sent a letter about the incident.
Motorists will receive a warning letter but will not be prosecuted, authorities said.
Chief Deputy Sheriff Ken Barnes said the information may be valuable to vehicle owners.
"An employer may not know his employee is speeding in the company car or a parent may not know his child is speeding," Barnes said.
