Letter: People should decide size of their LV City Council
Monday, June 2, 1997 | 11:59 a.m.
Concerning the SUN, May 28 story, "City wants voters to decide new wards."
Senate Bill 38 would automatically increase our City Council by two wards and councilmen. This would be done without a public vote or input. Therefore, I strongly oppose Senate Bill 38.
It's important to know who is behind SB38. The main advocate is state Sen. Joe Neal, D-North Las Vegas, not a Las Vegan. Logically, one must ask his true motives.
Without disrespect, nevertheless, Neal who I respect, would do better to put his energies and efforts into his own North Las Vegas -- cleaning up the crime, drugs and violent gangs there.
I respectfully suggest Las Vegas is quite capable of handling its own affairs without interference from outsiders and legislators who treat us as orphans.
Wisely, our City Council unanimously opposes SB38. Councilman Arnie Adamsen rightly proposes that Las Vegas voters decide how many should sit on the council. I praise and commend our City Council for their strong stand and unity on this most important issue.
