Letter: Memorial Day should note barbarity of war
Monday, June 2, 1997 | 11:59 a.m.
The unseen hands that have glamorized our patriotism, so that soldiers could fight around the world and die for principles that will never be clear to me. Children without their dads, mothers drifting to uncertain futures, their lives torn apart for a freedom they will never see.
Yes, I am a veteran of World War II and, at age 82, do not recognize the destruction of families as a just cause for wars. Memorial Day we remember; but do we have to look ahead again for more reasons to fight and kill again? I do not wish to live with more torment and tears anymore. War is the barbaric end to civilization.
