New crime statistics released by the FBI show the nation's crime rate fell for the fifth straight year, with violent crimes such as murder recording their largest one-year-drop in 35 years.
But in Las Vegas, homicides were up 36 percent, from 118 in 1995 to 161 in 1996.
Overall, crime in Las Vegas fell 5 percent, from 60,178 to 56,943 incidents reported.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police spokesman Sgt. Will Minor attributed the growing murder rate to the city's dramatic growth and an increase in domestic violence.
