Committee recommends that cultural center blend with convention facility

Monday, June 2, 1997 | 11:59 a.m.

"This is not the best site in the world, it isn't perfect, but it's the one we think might work," committee chairwoman Joyce Sheen told members of the Humboldt County Commission and Winnemucca City Council during a joint meeting on the proposal.

A design by architect Ken Rose proposed linking the main convention center and east hall with a glass atrium over a lobby area. An auditorium would be built behind the east hall on an existing parking area.

The project carries an estimated $3.5 million price tag, but Rose said using the parking area would save about $350,000 in excavation and other site work, The Humboldt Sun reported.

Sheen said the city received almost $2 million as part of an insurance settlement from the fire that destroyed the Nixon Opera House, and has set aside an additional $260,000 for the project.

She added that the committee is looking for grants and other private funding sources to make up the difference.
