Golfers no longer face water hazard at Carson Valley course
Tuesday, July 29, 1997 | 5:43 a.m.
The front nine holes of the Carson Valley Golf Course will reopen on Friday, seven months to the day after the New Year's flood ripped them apart in an assault that resulted in damage estimated at $1 million-$2 million.
"The first tee time is at 7 a.m.," course owner Don Brooks said, as if it weren't long spoken for.
The Carson River, which borders part of the course, breached a low dike during the flood and swept over the 18-hole course. The back nine reopened in March.
Brooks and his crews were left with the daunting task of removing rock and mud that covered the course and filling waist-deep craters where the river had carved itself a new bank. Then, they restored it to golf course conditions.
Volunteers cleared much of the debris, but Brooks said hard effort by his crews and by Crockett Enterprises put the front nine back in business about 10 months ahead of schedule.
