Pop groups Spin magic; Soul is Main Ingredient
Friday, July 25, 1997 | 9:05 a.m.
The Spinners and opening act Main Ingredient bring back classic rhythm and blues sounds of the '70s at Sunset Station's outdoor amphitheater Saturday at 9 p.m.
Originally formed in 1957 in Detroit, Mich. as the Domingoes, they became The Spinners when producer Harvey Fuqua discovered their talents. They started recording with Tri-Phi Records, which produced their first single "That's What Girls Are Made For."
A few years later, Tri-Phi merged with Motown Records and continued producing hit songs, but The Spinners didn't hit big until 1972 when they switched to Alantic Records.
In eight years The Spinners earned five gold albums which included the hit songs "It's a Shame" (composed by Stevie Wonder), "Could It Be I'm Falling in Love," "I'll Be Around," "Wake Up Susan," "Rubberband Man" and "Then Came You" (with Dionne Warwick).
They also were a hit in Great Britain, but instead they were known as The Detroit Spinners so they wouldn't be confused with the British band called the Spinners.
Although Phillipe Wynne left the band for a solo career in 1977 (he died of an on-stage heart attack at age 43), The Spinners continued to produce music through the late '70s and early '80s with hit songs such as "Working My Way Back to You," "Cupid/ I've Loved You for a Long Time" and"You Go Your Way (I'll Go Mine)."
Opening for The Spinners is The Main Ingredient. An ex-member of The Main Ingredient is Cuba Gooding, whose son, Cuba Gooding Jr., recently won a best supporting actor Oscar for "Jerry Maguire." Gooding has left the group, replaced by Carlton Bount. With Gooding the group had such hits as "Everybody Plays the Fool" and "Just Don't Want to Be Lonely."
Show tickets, at $15, are available at all Ticketmaster locations or the Sunset Station's promotion center. Call 547-7777.
