Letter: Gamez remarks uncalled for; he’s jealous of Tiger
Friday, July 25, 1997 | 10:25 a.m.
Isn't it amazing that Robert Gamez would make such ridiculous comments about Tiger Woods ("Tiger never had to prove himself." "It's a lot easier to play with that kind of money in the bank." "He wouldn't do his clinics and stuff if it wasn't for Nike.").
Let's see, while Gamez has been on Mars for the past year and a half, Tiger Woods has been proving himself by becoming the top amateur player for the third time, winning six professional tournaments since turning pro, being the leading money-maker on the tour this year and leading in Ryder Cup points. If that's not proving yourself, I'm not sure what it takes.
As far as Tiger's endorsement money, I don't remember seeing any dollar bills running around the golf course helping Tiger's balls go in when he dominated the field at the Masters. Does it matter whether Tiger is using his money or Nike's money for golf clinics? Isn't the important thing that children are getting to spend a day with a great golfer and getting valuable instruction free, regardless of who's footing the bill?
Mr. Gamez, I have a question for you. Can you spell E-N-V-Y?
