High school students to get five chances on exit exams

The bad news is that they won't be allowed to use calculators for the new five-hour test.
The test will be administered for the first time in April 1998. But juniors will take it as a "dress rehearsal" this October.
The state board had wanted the administer the test at a later date.
But the Nevada Legislature, in a move to raise educational standards, enacted a law forcing the use of the new test in the 1997-98 school year.
The test, which includes a two-hour math segment, a two-hour reading part and an hour-long writing portion, was written over the past two years by educators across the state.
