‘Summer Daze’ results in more than 30 arrests

More than 30 area gang members have been arrested and 12 illegal firearms seized as a result of "Operation Summer Daze," a federally funded attack on crime in public housing projects.
The project, launched by Metro Police's gang investigations section July 1, is financed by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
"Through the use of funds from outside the department, we will be able to double our enforcement activity targeting our most active gang areas," said Lt. Bill Conger.
Police will conduct community meetings, distribute anti-gang pamphlets and visit homes. The goal, Conger said, is to increase community awareness of Las Vegas' gang problem, help children stay out of gangs, and bring the most violent gang members to trial.
Operation Summer Daze will continue through Sept. 30.
