1960 - Jay Hebert beats Jim Ferrier by one stroke to win the PGA Championship.
1967 - Don January wins a playoff by two strokes over Don Massengale to win the PGA Championship.
1970 - The International Lawn Tennis Association institutes the nine-point tie-breaking rule.
1977 - Hollis Stacy wins the U.S. Women's Open by two strokes over Nancy Lopez.
1976 - John Naber of the United States becomes the first swimmer to break the 2-minute barrier in the 200-meter backstroke, at the Olympics in Montreal.
1976 - Mac Wilkins of the United States sets an Olympic record in the discus with a toss of 70 feet and 1-2 inch in Montreal.
