Scholarships available for urban kids
Thursday, July 24, 1997 | 9:13 a.m.
Exceptional students in the Southern Nevada Enterprise Community will have the chance to attend college with the assistance of a new grant program approved by the County Commission.
The Higher Education Enhancement Act program is an interlocal agreement between the county and the other jurisdictions in the Las Vegas Valley granting the Community College of Southern Nevada $150,000 in scholarship funds.
The scholarships are for the Enterprise Community, an area that includes nine census tracts in North Las Vegas, West Las Vegas, eastern Las Vegas and the Meadows Village areas.
Students will qualify based on their residency, high school achievement, community service, and need. During the term of their scholarship, the students will be tutored and counseled to help ensure their success. In exchange, the students upon graduation will be required to perform community service.
The Southern Nevada Enterprise Community was launched in December 1994 when President Clinton designated urban Las Vegas as an enterprise zone, a designation that brought with it $2.95 million in economic and social aid for the valley's urban core.
