KLVX Channel 10's "The Water Rules" won an Emmy at the 23rd annual San Diego/Southwestern Area Emmy Awards.
The award was bestowed on the Las Vegas public TV station Saturday in San Diego.
The first Emmy awarded to the station in its 29-year history honored the documentary for "outstanding achievement in historical or biographical programming."
Created to educate a generation of the Las Vegas Valley's population who have primarily come from other places where the rules for water may be very different, "The Water Rules" was written and produced by Daniel Garrison and edited by Reginald LaFrance.
"For most of its history, Las Vegas has been a place on the way to somewhere else," said Garrison. "But now that it's a destination and home for more and more people, issues of water use and abuse loom larger. Education about the water supply becomes imperative."
Clark County teachers will have access to the documentary through the wireless cable channels of KLVX's Instructional Television Service. A companion study guide also has been developed with support from Mirage Resorts and Lake Las Vegas.
The documentary also has been honored as a winner of the National Education Association's "1997 Award for the Advancement of Learning Through Broadcasting." This year's recipients included TNT, CBS, HBO and The Discovery Channel.
In April "The Water Rules" was recognized as Best Regional Documentary by the Radio-Television News Directors Association.
