Letter: Who should control matters of state? The state, of course

Saturday, July 19, 1997 | 11:23 a.m.

Now comes Sen. Orrin Hatch with a plan to introduce legislation that would ban gambling near schools, playgrounds, universities, housing projects, etc., lest it become an influence, evil or otherwise, on kids.

The question posed in your editorial was, "Should this matter be controlled by state and local municipalities?"

My answer is yes. I'm pretty sure Orrin's answer is yes. I'm also pretty sure that Orrin knows as well as I do who controls the matters of this state and its municipalities, thus his legislation.

If you and Harry Reid (and his spokesperson) don't, I recommend you read the SUN. Even with my distrust of the U.S. Congress, I favor that body over "them other guys."
