The Silver State Classic Challenge is an annual race from Lund to Hiko on Highway 318. The state closes down 90 miles of the highway for the race date. The Challenge has five classes of racing: touring class with speed bracket of 95 mph to 110 mph; grand touring, 115-125 mph; grand sport, 130-150 mph; super sport, 155-165 mph; and unlimited, 180-plus mph.
The race is open to any licensed driver with a four-wheeled vehicle.
The four-day schedule includes technical inspections, a press conference and luncheon on Sept. 18 at the Showboat; practice and qualifying sessions at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway; display of participating cars at the Showboat; traditional drivers' caravan to Ely and exhibit of cars in Ely; and the race, beginning at 8 a.m. Sept. 21. The festivities conclude with an awards banquet at 7 that night at the Showboat.
For information about participating in or viewing the race, call Steve Waldman at the Showboat, 385-9123, of Tom Mildren with Silver State Classic Challenge Inc., at 645-1601.
