Police say they are not sure how many times Milton Logan was hit because some of the bullets fired by officers may have caused multiple wounds. Logan is reported in fair condition at University Medical Center.
Police were responding to a call Sunday of a man assaulting a woman in a home.
When officers arrived and tried to enter the home, the suspect bolted from a doorway brandishing a rifle.
Police Lt. Chris Larotonda said the officers opened fire on the suspect when he pointed the rifle at them.
Larotonda said officers shot the suspect several times in the legs and hands, and he ran to a nearby fence and jumped it as officers continued to fire. The suspect collapsed in a street. Officers fired 34 rounds.
Police say the 61-year-old victim was punched several times, sexually assaulted and robbed.
