Letter: There are risks involved in hiring the homeless

Friday, July 18, 1997 | 12:03 p.m.

I understanding feeling empathy for a person wanting work to survive. However, there are other things we want to be reminded of for your own personal safety.

I called the Salvation Army in need of someone who will do some yard work. I picked up the gentleman, and he worked out well. On the trip back to the Salvation Army, he pleaded for one more day of work, which would be much appreciated for him financially. I agreed he could wash all my outdoor windows, however, I would be gone part of the time he was there. I picked him up, the house was locked and he had all he needed to do his job. What happened? He broke into the home and stole jewelry, radios, TV, etc., packed in pillow cases.

After the report, a few items were found and him, too. He spent a year in jail.

Years later, I tried again in a different state. I stayed in the house while these two men moved the items outside. The telephone rang and, in that few minutes, one man went into the bedroom and stole a $400 watch I had in a jar. Again, my fault for having poor habits with my jewelry.

Facts: Thirty-five percent of homeless people are mentally handicapped. Even hiring from what you feel is a good source, there are risks. I do not wish to hurt the job hiring, however, please understand mentally ill persons are among the many who are on the streets.

Thank the legislators for voting in funds to help the mentally ill, who have needed it for many years. It will happen in 1998. There are medications (very costly) to help these people. Let's do it.
