Senate Bill 262 would allow county commissions to appoint a person to an elected office when a vacancy occurs within 30 days of the election.
The Nevada Attorney General's office previously ruled Lander County needed to hold a special election to replace the late Janine Buhl, who left work in May 1995 after becoming seriously ill.
A related matter, Assembly Bill 425, would permit a district court to declare an office vacant if the elected official is prevented by illness from discharging his duties for more than six months.
Assembly Bill 153 would allow an election for general obligation bonds at least once each year, so a county would not have to wait two years for a general election.
Assembly Bill 128 extends to ambulance drivers and attendants some provisions granted to volunteer firefighters. An employer also would be forbidden from penalizing an ambulance driver or attendant for an absence from work.
The county struck out on a bill that would have allowed counties to request a second legal opinion from someone other than the district attorney. That bill was opposed by the Nevada Association of District Attorneys, Baughman said.
