Friday, July 18, 1997 | 11:09 a.m.

Whitney Hutchison, a fifth grader at William R. Lummis Elementary School, won a $50 bond for her essay on "Patriotism and the American Flag."

The contest was sponsored by the Samuel Radin Jewish War Veterans Ladies Auxiliary, Post 21. The 10-year-old winner is a student of teacher Gina Cordaro.

Whitney, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mark Hutchison of Summerlin, was cited for stirring emotion by emphasizing personal pride and love of her country. She also explained how the flag symbolizes those qualities.

Judges includes Ruth Weinrott from the auxiliary's Americanism Committee, poet and author Roslyn Farhi, and Irene Epstein, emeritus professor of journalism at San Jose State University in California.
