City officials mum on contract for parking garage

Friday, July 18, 1997 | 8:42 a.m.

City attorney Brad Jerbic says he can't comment on the proposed ordinance, which could come before the city council for a vote on July 28.

"We're not going to comment on it," added city spokeswoman Nadia Wiggins.

The subject of the silence is an ordinance that would cap at $6 million the amount downtown casinos have to pay to acquire land for the project's parking garage.

A 1993 contract between the city and the casinos requires that the casinos pay any land acquisition costs over $6.4 million.

Now the city is considering an ordinance that would force taxpayers to pick up the tab for the first $6.4 million, then anything over $12.4 million, thus limiting the casinos' liability to $6 million.

The costs for the garage are expected to soar, with landowners whose property was seized suing the city. One of the landowners, Harry Pappas, says he believes the city cut a deal with the casinos in secret meetings to shift the burden to the taxpayers.
