Vegas measure would make taxpayers liable for legal bills

Tuesday, July 15, 1997 | 8:41 a.m.

Mayor Jan Jones sponsored the measure but has not committed herself to supporting it. She said she was dismayed by criticism the ordinance has received.

The measure would amend a deal between downtown casinos and the city of Las Vegas regarding the legal costs of obtaining land for the Fremont Street Experience parking garage. Under that agreement, the city agreed to pay the first $6.4 million in land-acquisition costs, with downtown casinos picking up any additional expenses.

Jones' measure would cap the casinos' liability at $6 million. If it passes, city taxpayers would pay the first $6.4 million, and then any legal costs over $12.4 million.

The city used eminent domain to seize much of the property where the garage was built. Several parcel owners have since sued the city, claiming their land was illegally taken.
