Victim’s mother relieved parole denied

Thursday, Jan. 30, 1997 | 11:59 a.m.

CARSON CITY -- Carol Nicoletti said she felt a "burst of energy" when she learned her daughter's killer had been denied parole.

"It was a great day," said Nicoletti on Wednesday. "He's an evil man and he never showed any remorse."

She was speaking of Simon Macias, who has served five years of a life term for second-degree murder of his wife in 1992 in Las Vegas.

Nicoletti, who lives in Sparks, gathered more than 13,000 signatures on a petition opposing the release of Macias, 28.

His appearance was his first before the board and he will have to wait until May 2000 before he can reapply. The board said the denial was based on the severity of his crime, the factors involved and the death of the victim.

Macias pleaded no contest to the crime that he stabbed his wife, Susan, at their trailer home, taped her hands, tossed her into a trunk of a car and dumped the body in Henderson at a former residence of the couple.

Nicoletti attended the parole hearing in Lovelock two weeks ago where Macias is imprisoned.

"It had a horrible effect on me being in the same room with him," she said. "I was feeling weak." But when she was informed Tuesday of the board's vote, she said she gained new strength.

"I don't feel quite as fearful," she said. "He will be locked up for three more years. I was worried he would be back on the streets."
