Letter: Poor traffic planning causes a Sahara nightmare

Thursday, Jan. 30, 1997 | 11:59 a.m.

Pulling out onto Sahara from Verdinal has become something of a nightmare, particularly around rush hour. Making a left to travel east on Sahara is impossible, making a right to travel west is downright dangerous. It is not a question of if someone is going to be killed at the intersection, but when. Verdinal is the only avenue where hundreds of people can safely enter a major street intersection (jones or Torrey Pines off Oakey) with the assistance of a traffic light. Additionally, I would like to add that the construction of Verdinal was paid for using taxpayers' money. It will continue to be maintained by taxpayer dollars, to which Nevada Power employees contribute as significantly as anyone else. Should we not have the same benefits as the residents of the neighborhood? Nevada Power has continually tried to be a good neighbor. After the initial complaints arose, memos circulated throughout the company to only use Verdinal as a last resort. We have no objections to reasonable traffic constraints, but we feel we have the same right to use Verdinal as anyone else.
