Doc Severinsen to give concert
Thursday, Jan. 30, 1997 | 11:59 a.m.
The guest soloist will be Barbara Morrison.
Best known to late-night television audiences for his trumpet playing, quick banter and distinctive sartorial style as the "Tonight Show's" former musical director, Severinsen's career has included symphonic, jazz and big-band concert appearances, recording and commercials, as well as the design and manufacture of trumpets.
Severinsen tours the country performing in an array of musical styles, performing classical and pop music with scores of symphony orchestras. He is principal pops conductor of the Phoenix Symphony, the Buffalo Philharmonic, the Minnesota Orchestra and the Milwaukee Symphony.
Severinsen also plays jazz with his jazz group, Facets, and the big-band tunes with the famous Tonight Show Band, now known as Doc Severinsen and His Big Band.
In a professional career that spans more than 40 years, Severinsen has recorded more than 30 albums, ranging in style from big band to jazz fusion to classical. His recent recordings have included the Grammy-nominated "Once More With Feeling" and "Merry Christmas From the Tonight Show Orchestra." His last album, "Unforgettably Doc," was recorded with the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra.
In addition to his performing career, Severinsen has helped design "the ultimate horn." Christened the Bel Canto, the instrument was designed for the professional player to encompass the best of Old World craftsmanship and modern technology, and is available in limited production.
The performance will be in the Nicholas Horn Theatre on the Cheyenne campus, 3200 E. Cheyenne Ave. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for students and seniors. For details or reservations, call 651-5483.
