Senators push new bill targeting Nevada
Wednesday, Jan. 22, 1997 | 11:59 a.m.
Sens. Larry Craig of Idaho and Frank Mukowski of Alaska introduced the bill, which is identical to one that died in Congress last year after President Clinton threatened to veto the measure.
The measure passed the Senate by a 63-to-37 vote, but the House never scheduled a vote.
The proposal would place radioactive waste from the nation's power plants at the Nevada Test Site until a permanent repository is approved. Yucca Mountain, 100 miles northwest of Las Vegas, is the only site currently being studied for the permanent waste dump.
