Probe possible political work on county time
Wednesday, Jan. 22, 1997 | 11:59 a.m.
The probe is linked to an investigation that $120,000 was spent in unathorized renovations of a police substation.
The investigation focuses on chief repairman Bill Barrett, who has been suspended for five days without pay for ordering the remodeling of a police substation that county officials say isn't in their jurisdiction.
County Manager Pat Shalmy's office and General Services Director Earl Hawkes also are investigating reports Barrett granted overtime pay for work that was never done.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported Wednesday that several current and former maintenance employees have reported irregularities in Barrett's facilities division. Some describe stacks of campaign brochures stored in maintenance offices, campaign signs hauled in Barrett's county-issued vehicle and workers placing campaign stickers on county workers' cars while on the county clock.
