Man pleads to having acid thrown on ex-wife

Friday, Jan. 17, 1997 | 11:59 a.m.

Robert Breault, 54, was sentenced on one count of assault with a deadly weapon and one count of mayhem for the December 1995 attack on 41-year-old Toni Smith.

Smith, a library aide at Crestwood Elementary School, suffered third-degree burns over half her body when sulfuric acid was thrown on her as she prepared to leave the school.

The attack took place the day the couple's divorce became final.

The man who threw the acid, Rudy Estevez, 30, pleaded guilty in March to battery with a deadly weapon and mayhem. He was sentenced to at least eight years in prison.

Maritza Marincota, 27, was sentenced earlier this month to a minimum of two years in prison for her role in helping plan the attack.

Breault entered an Alford plea, which requires him to admit only that prosecutors can prove their case against him.
