The holiday honoring slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. is celebrated on the third Monday in January. It became a federal holiday in 1983. King was born Jan. 15, 1929, and killed in 1968. Here's what is open and closed on Monday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day:
* SAFETY: Police and fire emergency services as usual. Administrative offices closed.
* UTILITIES: Closed: Nevada Power, Las Vegas Valley Water District, Prime Cable. Open: Sprint, Southwest Gas.
* GOVERNMENT: Closed: Las Vegas, Henderson, Boulder City, North Las Vegas, Clark County, state, courts, federal offices, federal courthouse. The Nevada Legislature will open its 1997 session despite the holiday.
* SCHOOLS: Closed, no classes: Clark County School District, Community College of Southern Nevada, UNLV.
* MAIL: Closed, no deliveries: U.S. Postal Service (however, eight Post Office Express sites in area Lucky stores will be open and pickups will be made from blue collection boxes). Open, deliveries as usual: United Parcel Service.
* NEWSPAPER: SUN offices open, afternoon editions published and delivered as usual.
* TRANSIT: Downtown Transportation Center: Open. City Trolleys: Holiday schedule (no Meadows Mall route). Citizen Area Transit: Holiday schedule (extra peak-hour buses will not be in operation).
* LIBRARIES: Closed: Las Vegas-Clark County, North Las Vegas. Open: Henderson, Boulder City.
* GARBAGE: Silver State Disposal pickups as usual. Offices also are open.
* MATRIMONY: Marriage License Bureau open 24 hours, starting 8 a.m. Friday, closing 12 a.m. Tuesday.
* FINANCES: Closed: Banks. Open: Brokerage firms.
* ZOO: Open: Southern Nevada Zoological Botanical Park.
* PARKING: City's parking metered spaces free on Monday.
