Cabbie stabbed, robbed; suspect sought

Friday, Jan. 17, 1997 | 11:59 a.m.

Metro Police are looking for a man who stabbed and robbed a cab driver after the driver picked up the man at the Luxor hotel-casino.

Investigators learned that the driver picked up a fare at the south doors of the Luxor about 1:40 a.m. Tuesday. The man told the driver to take him to a local night club.

In the 4200 block of Koval Lane, the man reached over the front seat, stabbed the driver, and demanded money, police said. The driver struggled and suffered several deep cuts to his hands, face, chest and shoulders.

He lost control of the cab and crashed into a street light in the 4400 block of Koval. The driver escaped from the car and collapsed a few feet away from the cab. Another cab driver in the area who happened on the incident chased the suspect, who fled the area on foot. The second driver lost track of the suspect in an apartment complex in the 4400 block of Deckow Lane, police said. The wounded driver was taken to University Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition.

Police are looking for a white man described as 6 feet 1 inch, about 170 pounds and in his late 20s or early 30s with reddish-brown hair. He was wearing tan pants and a thigh-length blue denim coat with a brown collar. The driver told police that the suspect received several cuts to one of his hands during the struggle with the knife. The weapon, a 3-inch paring knife, was located near the apartment complex.

Police have asked anyone with information to call robbery at 229-3921 or Secret Witness at 385-5555.
