Blood-shortage crisis comes to quick end

SUN STAFF REPORTS

The blood shortage crisis in Southern Nevada is over.

United Blood Services of Las Vegas said the "outpouring of support" -- not to mention the outpouring of the red stuff into plastic storage bags -- has brought an end to the most serious local blood shortage in nearly a decade.

"The quick response from the media in informing the community was the turning point in the emergency," said UBS Associate Executive Director Judy Sligar, noting that at the shortage's peak last week, blood supplies were down from the normal two-week reserves to less than a one-day supply.

"United Blood Services now has an adequate blood supply for area hospitals."

The crisis hit its high point last Thursday when two Las Vegans had to cancel elective open-heart surgery operations, as blood supplies, especially O positive and O negative, were down to a precious few hundred pints.

UBS, which supplies blood to 18 area hospitals, issued an emergency shortage alert at 5 a.m. last Wednesday.

On Thursday and Friday, 721 pints were drained from the arms of volunteers -- 400 pints is normal for a two-day period -- and supplies were further replenished over the weekend and on Monday, officials said today, noting that 1,800 Southern Nevadans gave blood during the crisis period.

UBS, which generally keeps 1,000-1,400 pints of all types of blood and blood components in reserves, said the shortage was caused in part by low turnouts and the cancellation of blood drives after the holiday season.

To give blood and prevent another shortage, potential donors can call 228-4483 or 438-7563 to set up an appointment.
