Nonprofit groups to submit new tax-exempt letters

CARSON CITY -- The state Department of Taxation says it is starting to put in place the new law that exempts charitable, religious and educational organizations from collecting the sales tax on items sold.
Voters in November approved the exemption and the state department said it is now notifying organizations currently holding letters of exemption.
These groups are asked to reapply in order to maintain their tax-exempt status because the new law has different standards than the old law.
It had long been the policy of the Taxation Department to exempt the groups from the sales and use tax, but it was discovered that it violated the law. The issue was placed on the 1994 election ballot but voters refused to grant the exemption. It appeared on the 1996 ballot and was approved 66-34 percent.
The department said a form will be sent to nonprofit organizations that can be filled out and returned to continue the tax-exempt status. Exemption letters issued under the old law will expire June 30.
