Letter: Police shooting reveals a sickness infects Metro
Friday, Jan. 10, 1997 | 11:59 a.m.
Living in Las Vegas 30 years now, I thought I had seen it all, but Metro drive-bys has to take the cake. Through one avenue or another, we all have become aware of police-brutality issues. It doesn't paint a pretty picture for our image.
Regarding the latest homicide by an off=duty officer, I have a question. When is the coroner's inquest going to be held? After all, it is standard procedure to provide any victim of police homicide a coroner's inquest. It doesn't matter whether the officer was on or off duty. I would like to also know what would happen if the homicide was labeled justifiable.
This police department has become an embarrassment to all Las Vegans. In all fairness to Sheriff Keller, we as a community share some of the blame, we deserve the very type of police force we now have. It is so sad that it brings tears to my eyes, but not as many tears as the Mendoza family will shed. God bless the Mendozas in their time of great grief. I am finally at a loss for words.
