Chamber music on tap at UNLV theater

The performance part of a four-day residency at UNLV by guest artist Weait is free and open to the public. Also free to the public is his lecture, "Practicing for Those Who Hate It," at 2:30 p.m. Jan 22 in Room 147 of the Alta Ham Fine Arts Building.

The concert features a work by Weait, "Ten By Three," for oboe, bassoon and piano. Other works include Beethoven's Sextet for Two Clarinets, Two Bassoons and Two Horns and "Bounce" by Michael Daugherty for two bassoons.

Weait will be joined by members of the Sierra Winds: Richard Soule, Stephen Caplan, Felix Viscuglia, Lynn Beck and Janice McKay as well as UNLV students Steve Dawson and Chris Castellanos.

Weait is the bassoon professor at Ohio State University and is the former principal bassoon player of the Toronto Symphony. He served the orchestra for 17 years under Maestros Ozawa, Anceri and Andrew Davis. Previously, he was a member of the Chamber Symphony of Philadelphia in New York and Philadelphia.

Since 1988, he has been music director of the Central Ohio Symphony Orchestra.

He has recorded solo and chamber albums. His compact disc, "Telemann for the Bassoon," was released in 1995.
