Letter: O.J. double jeopardy trials violated constitutional rights

Tuesday, Feb. 18, 1997 | 11:59 a.m.

The Fifth Amendment of the Constitution protects against such double jeopardy and, in 1969, the Supreme Court found that the 14th Amendment brought the applicability of the Fifth to the states. Do we ignore the Bill of Rights because the unanimous verdict of the first jury was widely unpopular? Is this a trend we want to see propagated -- criminal-case acquittals being retried in civil court for plaintiffs with either the funds or enough press for a second trial to be profitable for attorneys?

Is this what we, as a nation, have reduced ourselves to?
