Letter: Corrections officers don’t get support from superiors

Tuesday, Feb. 18, 1997 | 11:59 a.m.

I recall one incident well. While I was serving on transportation, an inmate threatened my life while at Clark County Detention Center. After the shift lieutenant was called and a Notice of Charges was written, the inmate was allowed to remain in the yard, although such conduct justifies "hole" time. This is and has been a common practice at SDCC.

I feel our prison system needs a major change and should start with an investigation and probable termination of all prison administration. Our elected officials should appoint a director of prisons with the backbone to make sure the laws of our penal system are properly executed. I further suggest that the new director start fresh by cleaning house of some of the money-gathering, do-nothing wardens in our institutions. Ask the director why such a large turnover in officers exists in the system and he will, of course, use the excuse of pay. Why then is a former officer I know of working in a casino for less? Come on, Nevadans. This is a wake-up call!
