Big crowd expected for Air Force celebration

Tuesday, Feb. 18, 1997 | 11:59 a.m.

Nellis Air Force Base will host the April 25-26 event. Las Vegas was selected because of its military base and convention-friendly city, military officials said.

"This is really the last great event of the 20th century for a lot of Air Force people," Air Force Association spokesman Howard Metzger said. "A lot of them, particularly for the World War II veterans, this is their last go-round. They won't be around to celebrate the 100th anniversary or the 75th anniversary. It will be their last hurrah."

An estimated 10,000 rooms in about two dozen hotels and motels have been reserved a year in advance. Groups of veterans are booking entire airplanes.
