Gibson seeks Henderson office

James B. Gibson, the son of late state Sen. James Gibson, who served 28 years in state office, announced today the start of his political career.

Gibson, at a morning news conference, announced he will run for mayor of Henderson. Current Mayor Bob Groesbeck has decided not to seek re-election.

"This is a good starting point," said Gibson spokesman Mike Sullivan. "The city faces growth and development, and he is ready to solve the problems and meet the challenges of this office."

Gibson is general counsel for American Pacific Corp. He has served on numerous civic boards, including the Henderson Civil Service Board and St. Rose Dominican Hospital board of directors.

His father, who died in August 1988 after being diagnosed that year with cancer, won election to the Assembly in 1959 and later served 22 years in the Senate. A five-time majority leader, he was known as a staunch advocate for education.

The younger Gibson was born in Las Vegas, and has been a Henderson resident for 42 years. He is a graduate of Brigham Young University and has a law degree from California Western School of Law.

He and his wife of 25 years, Lora, have six children.
