Parolee receives death sentence for killing of retiree

Wednesday, Feb. 12, 1997 | 11:59 a.m.

The jury that convicted Donald Sherman imposed the death penalty Tuesday after learning he was on parole for another murder in Idaho, and had plotted to escape the Clark County Detention Center here by killing guards.

Sherman was convicted last week in the first-degree murder of 63-year-old Lester Bauer.

Bauer was beaten to death with a hammer as he slept in his Sun City home.

Sherman had been involved in a relationship with the doctor's daughter prior to the murder.

He was convicted in the 1981 slaying of an Idaho grocery store owner, and was out on parole at the time he killed Bauer.
