Northwest to get most new schools

Wednesday, Feb. 12, 1997 | 11:59 a.m.

The rapidly-growing northwest section of the Las Vegas Valley stands to be the big winner in getting new schools.

If the Clark County School Board follows the advice of school district staff and the Bond Oversight Committee, five of the 10 school sites scheduled to be voted on at Thursday's board meeting will be in the northwest.

Three elementary, one middle and one high school are recommended to be built in the northwest to relieve overcrowding at existing schools in the area.

The remaining recommendations include one elementary school in the valley's southeast region, one in the northeast and one in North Las Vegas. Also, one middle school is recommended for the southern part of the valley and one high school is recommended for the central part.

Four of the elementary schools will be funded by the 1994 $605 million school bond and two will be built with money from the $643 million 1996 bond. All six are scheduled to open at the beginning of the 1999-2000 school year.

The two middle schools will be paid for with 1996 bond money and are scheduled to open at the beginning of the 1989-99 school year.

Money from the 1996 bond will fund the two high schools, which are scheduled to open at the start of the 1999-2000 school year.
