Basic, Gorman capture top seedings for Zone

While six teams remain in the chase for the four remaining Southern AAAA Zone tournament berths in girls' basketball, at least we know who the top two seeds will be.
Basic and Bishop Gorman clinched their respective division titles on Tuesday night. The Wolves turned back Eldorado 47-35 in a matchup of the top clubs in the Sunrise Division, while the Gaels downed Bonanza 55-46 to secure first place in the Sunset Division.
Las Vegas, Green Valley and Chaparral are playing for two spots in the Sunrise; Cheyenne, Durango and Silverado are doing the same in the Sunset.
* BASIC 47, ELDORADO 35: Teresa Ramirez, Brandi Depoorter, Melanie Harris and Valerie Harris accounted for all but one of the Wolves' points in their win over the visiting Sundevils. Basic is 17-5, 12-1 in the league, and its win removed any chance for Eldorado (17-8, 10-3) to catch or overtake the Wolves for first place. Ramirez and Depoorter each scored 14 points. Valerie Harris chipped in 10, her twin sister Melanie eight. Camina Stevenson had 12 points to lead Eldorado, which figures to be the second seed in the division for the Zone tournament.
* WESTERN 68, CIMARRON-MEMORIAL 67, 2OT: The Warriors (13-9, 9-4 in Sunset) picked up a huge road win, outlasting the Spartans (3-10, 6-16), who lost their second overtime game in the last week. Tara Carter led Western with 20 points. Emily McCarter had 20 for Cimarron. The Warriors will be the second seed in the division for the Zone tournament, which means they'll get a home game Tuesday night in the quarterfinals.
* CHEYENNE 42, SILVERADO 38: The Skyhawks (14-12, 6-7 in Sunset) have picked a horrible time to slump. Their third consecutive loss leaves them in fifth place with one game left in the season. The Desert Shields (12-10, 7-6), conversely, now can clinch a postseason berth if they win at Bishop Gorman on Friday night. Yolanda Banks led Cheyenne with 13 points.
* LAS VEGAS 41, CHAPARRAL 39: Krystal Turner's attempted layup with nine seconds left circled the rim three times before falling away, and the Wildcats hung on to beat the visiting Cowboys in the Sunrise Division. Las Vegas is 13-7, 8-4 in league, and its win was important. If the Wildcats win at Rancho on Thursday night, they'll qualify for Zone. Chaparral's tough loss leaves it at 9-12, 7-6, one game behind Green Valley for fourth place. Edrecka Wolridge's 19 points led Las Vegas. Turner had 14 for Chaparral.
* DURANGO 73, CLARK 61: Angie Kinchen scored 14 points, had 12 assists and recorded 10 steals for the Trailblazers (11-14, 7-6 in Sunset) in their win. Durango is tied with Cheyenne for third place. Like the Desert Shields, the Trailblazers need only to win Friday night to move on to Zone. However, they'll have to win on the road at second-place Western to do it. The Chargers (8-13, 5-8) were taken out of postseason consideration with the loss.
* BISHOP GORMAN 55, BONANZA 46: At Bonanza, Adrienne Sigford scored 17 points, and teammate Amy Roban added 16 as the Gaels (21-7, 11-2 in Sunset) formally were crowned division champions. Shastian Gago led all scorers with 22 points for Bonanza.
* GREEN VALLEY 65, RANCHO 34: Lupe Trejo buried nine 3-pointers and led the Gators with 30 points in their Sunrise Division win at Rancho. Green Valley is 13-8, 8-5 in league and in fourth place. The Gators must win at Vo-Tech on Friday night to advance to Zone. The Rams (4-18, 3-9) got 14 points from Susan Ayala.
* VALLEY 49, VO-TECH 32: Jessica Urbano scored 22 points as the Vikings won for just the third time all season. Valley is 3-19 overall, 3-10 in the Sunrise Division. Vo-Tech falls to 0-13 in league and 0-17 overall. Kisha Williams led the Roadrunners with 10 points.
