Daytona 500-Qualifying Procedure

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The procedure for filling the field for Sunday's Daytona 500.
Positions 1-2: top two qualifiers from first-round time trials Saturday (Mike Skinner and Steve Grissom)
Positions 3-30: determined in Thursday's Twin 125-mile qualifying races, with top 14 finishers, excluding Skinner and Grissom, in each race. (lineups for Twin 125s determined by three rounds of time trials)
Positions 31-38: fastest of remaining drivers from three rounds of time trials
Positions 39-42: provisional starters based on final 1996 car-owner points (could be fewer than four, depending on eligibility)
Position 43: used only if needed for most recent Winston Cup champion who fails to make the field in any other manner
