Says everyone will pay for transportation improvements

Friday, Feb. 7, 1997 | 11:59 a.m.

The Regional Transportation Commission is being urged to act quickly in seeking federal funds to help avoid traffic gridlock in the booming Las Vegas Valley.

Federal funds could provide as much as 75 percent of the money needed for projects such as increased bus service and a fixed-rail system from McCarran International Airport to the resort corridor.

Consultants warn that there are currently about $3.5 billion in requests ahead of them for federal funds.

Possible local funding sources include increasing vehicle registration fees, vehicle fuel tax, and establishing highway tolls.

More likely ideas include increasing property and sales taxes. The law allows up to a half-cent of the sales tax to go toward transportation. Currently in Nevada, a quarter of a cent is earmarked for transportation needs.

Money from the private sector could come from developer fees and contributions, consultants told RTC members Thursday.
