‘Purlie’ a Henderson production
Friday, Feb. 7, 1997 | 11:59 a.m.
The musical comedy, originally titled "Purlie Victorious," will be produced by Platinum Productions and directed by the company's executive director, Oscar Robinson. The musical, written by Ossie Davis, was a 1961 Broadway hit and later adapted for the screen as the 1963 classic "Gone Are the Days."
The story is about a self-appointed preacher scheming to undo a despotic plantation owner, symbolic of freeing his people and the ways of the Old South.
Davis is now best known as a fixture in Spike Lee films such as "School Daze" (1988), "Do the Right Thing" (1989), and "Malcolm X" (1992). Since 1948, Davis has been married to actress Ruby Dee, a command performer who also starred in the original film adaptation.
Tickets are $5 for students and seniors, and $8 for adults. Tickets purchased at the door will be $7 for students and seniors, and $10 for adults.
