Henderson student selected as Jason Project ‘Argonaut’

Friday, Feb. 7, 1997 | 11:59 a.m.

Gebhard is a ninth-grader at Green Valley High School and is one of 26 competitively selected "Student Argonauts" who will join Dr. Robert Ballard and the team of Jason Project scientists at the Yellowstone expedition site April 24-May 4.

The Jason Project is a yearlong scientific learning adventure that culminates with 55-hour, live, interactive broadcasts from the Yellowstone and Iceland expedition sites, April 28-May 9.

"You are there" telecommunications technologies called telepresence let Gebhard's classmates back home -- as well as students at Primary Interactive Network Sites throughout the United States, United Kingdom, Bermuda and Mexico -- join the expedition live via satellite, interact with scientists and control live-feed video cameras.

This year's research locations, Yellowstone and Iceland, were chosen because both are situated directly above geothermal "hot spots." Gebhard will conduct field studies with scientists that relate to geology (geysers, boiling mudpots and volcanic activity), biology (human, wolf, elk, bear, bison and bird migration) and glaciology (glacier movement and how it affects climate).

The Jason Foundation for Education is supported by an alliance of public, private and nonprofit organizations that are committed to the improvement of science and technological education for all students.
