‘British Are Coming’ to Henderson concert
Friday, Feb. 7, 1997 | 11:59 a.m.
Admission to the 3 p.m. performance is free.
Lano will appear as a soloist and guest conductor. Arthur Bartner, director of the USC Trojan Band, will share the podium with Mark Laycock, music director emeritus. The program is titled "The British Are Coming!" as four selections were written in or inspired by the British Isles.
Lano will perform Mozart's Horn Concerto No. 3, a technical masterpiece he wrote two decades after composing his first symphony in London at the age of 8.
The Henderson Civic Symphony also will perform Haydn's Symphony No. 101 in D, which was written after he took up residency in London. The symphony is nicknamed "The Clock" because of the rhythmic character in the second movement. The work is considered one of his most skillfully crafted and finely honed pieces.
The concert also will include works by two native British composers. Ralph Vaughn Williams' "English Folk Song Suite" is a reflection of one of the most celebrated musicians who spent much of his life collecting and reworking music representative of the English countryside. William Walton's "Shakespeare Suite" will be performed also. The selection was composed for Laurence Olivier's film "Richard III."
The Henderson Civic Symphony is an all-volunteer orchestra of student musicians, professionals, music educators and retired performers. They play under the direction of Glenn Cooper.
Future performances will include afternoons of operatic and jazz performances with the symphony and clarinetist Alan Lawson, as well as the fourth annual Young Artists Concert.
