Letter: Las Vegas’ triumvirate prevailed over homeowners

A good, dedicated Las Vegan, Sue Brna has resigned as president of the Charleston Heights Neighborhood Association. She fought the good fight against unbridled expansion. I met her once at the inception of the association and have great admiration for her and her efforts on our behalf.
Unfortunately, though, Deskin is right. The Rome-Las Vegas triumvirate -- casinos, developers and politicians -- has decreed nothing or no one will stand in the way of their expansion and vision for Las Vegas.
In the expansion of U.S. 95, families, friendships, etc., will be disrupted and homes demolished. The anti-Rhodes Ranch development defeat. The use of eminent domain by the city. And the list goes on.
Deskin concluded: "They (we the people) are all facing the inevitable. Nothing can be done as city and county officials continue to approve new developments and improvements."
Truer words were never spoken.
Nevertheless, basically, I support the triumvirate. Progress is praiseworthy. In its evolution is the greater Las Vegas of the future. The negatives and disenfranchisement inherent in progress has always been and always will be. Unfortunate, yes, but as pragmatic Americans, we adapt and learn to live in spite of it.
I maintain there are only three viable options:
Though I am not a cynic, I respectfully suggest Thomas Wolfe may have been right. To try and return to a past, simpler Las Vegas without the present-day ills is futile.
You never can go home again.
