Genoa town board supports post office location in commercial area

The motion was advanced by board member Kara Hayes and endorsed by fellow board member Joe Antonucci. The third member of the panel, Steve Florman, abstained without giving any explanation.
Some residents urged the town board to take no position, but advocates of a downtown location for the new post office said the Postal Service wanted some guidance from the panel.
The downtown proponents also submitted four more locations available within the commercial area, adding onto a list of four other possible sites. At least six of the sites are available for sale or lease.
The Postal Service, after months of local opposition, recently decided to scale back plans for a nearly 6,000-square-foot office to replace a cramped 611-square-foot facility. Plans now call for a 4,000-square-foot office.
Keith LaShier, manager of the Denver Facilities Service Office, also said the Post Office will look for a site other than one just north of town, on Foothill Road and Centennial Drive, that was strongly opposed by the downtown advocates.
But LaShier also said the Post Office is keeping an option on the Centennial site in the event that a suitable downtown location can't be found.
The downtown proponents say that if the Post Office can utilize a smaller facility, it would be in keeping with the character of the town and would fit on smaller in-town lots. They also say two of the sites have buildings that could be easily remodeled.
