Snowy travel is likely to greet people crossing the Sierra New Year's night.
A weather system developing over the eastern Pacific is expected to move into California early New Year's Day.
Rain and snow will spread into the Sierra by nightfall, producing locally heavy accumulations as the storm progresses slowly east across the region into Friday morning.
Behind that, cooler temperatures are likely to move into the area on Friday with highs lowering into the 30s and 40s. Nighttime lows will drop into the single digits in the Northeast to the teens in the west.
In southern Nevada, lows will be mostly in the 30s and 40s with highs in the 60s.
