Search for driver who tried to run down officer
Friday, Dec. 26, 1997 | 8:34 a.m.
The officer - who fired four shots at the vehicle - escaped uninjured. So, apparently, did the driver of the pickup.
Police say a patrol officer observed a suspicious truck and learned the license plate was reported stolen. With the assistance of a backup unit, the officer approached the vehicle on foot.
Police say the driver of the pickup put the vehicle in gear and drove toward the officer, who backed up against a fence.
The officer fired four shots at the vehicle, all of which struck the pickup.
The truck veered away from the officer and struck a patrol car. The driver then fled on foot.
Police say there was no evidence to indicate the driver had been struck.
The name of the officer involved in the shooting will not be released for 48 hours, per department policy.
