Former UNLV track and field coach Al McDaniels has been named an assistant coach for the United States women's team at the 1999 Pan American Games to be held July 24-Aug. 8 in Winnipeg.
McDaniels, now a department of physical education professor, was part of the Nevada delegation to the 1997 USA Track & Field national convention in Dallas earlier this month. He is a member of the men's and women's development, the masters track and field and the officials certification committees.
For 18 seasons, McDaniels guided the women's cross country and track programs at UNLV, leading the women's outdoor team to five Big West Conference titles and 10 NCAA championship appearances, including a sixth-place finish in 1992.
The four-time conference coach of the year has mentored 29 All-Americans, including Sheila Tarr, the 1984 NCAA champion in the heptahlon; Trena Hall, the 1987 NCAA champion in the indoor 1,000 meters; and Trevaia Williams, alternate for the 1996 U.S. Olympic team in the 100-meter hurdles.
